As free and fair elections face unprecedented threats, employers recognize that a strong economy needs strong democracy.
In a new Morning Consult poll, employers say companies should support American democracy, and that customers should support them.
WASHINGTON, May 23, 2022 / PRNewswire / – A coalition of employers and organizations announced today Business and Democracy Initiativea new partnership aimed at protecting the integrity of our elections and restoring confidence in democratic institutions, because a strong economy needs a strong democracy.
The founding partners of the Business & Democracy Initiative are key entrepreneurs and advocates: the Black Economic Alliance, the Leadership Now Project, and Public Private Strategies. Leaders of the American business community see democracy and voting rights as economic issues. According to a study by Freedom House, 45 of the world’s 50 companies operate in a democracy. The Business & Democracy Initiative will engage business leaders to change the dialogue about our democracy, drive corporate change, and secure the next generation of American prosperity.
New research Morning Consult, on behalf of the Business & Democracy Initiative, demonstrates that the business community wants to be active in supporting American democracy, and will support their clients. The results show:
- 96% of employers say that a well-functioning democracy is “important” for a strong economy.
- 80% of employers believe that companies should act to protect democracy and ensure safe and fair elections.
- 51% of employers say that their business is more likely than five years ago to encourage employees to take a pro-democracy stance or speak out, or to take a public stance as a business.
- 64% of consumers say a business with a public commitment to democracy shows that the business cares for its customers, cares for its employees and has the right values.
