The Natick Health Council must consider laboratory regulations

NATICK – Natick health officials are looking into setting local laboratory rules just weeks after he launched talks on community safety at a research and development facility at the Neiman Marcus store in the Natick Mall.

Last month, residents of the shopping center expressed concern that NM Redevelopment’s plans for the site could eventually include a lab. The project is still in its infancy and the developers have not yet confirmed that the project will have a laboratory.

The following interviews focused on the levels of biosafety: the designations assigned to laboratories to determine the protective measures required, depending on the materials used.

What do the levels of biosecurity mean?

Each level of biosafety (BSL) carries certain risks, but also some protective equipment, safety measures, and oversight, Public Health Director Michael Boudreau explained at a presentation at Tuesday’s Health Council meeting.

For example, BSL 1 laboratories work with materials that pose minimal risk to the community.

“The Level 1 biosafety lab is basically a high school lab,” Boudreau said.
