Mental health is now more important than ever to help someone scale the solution

Conversation about how people get mental health care has become a major concern today. As people seek new avenues for therapy beyond the traditional 1: 1 therapist and client model, the Real Mental Welfare Platform prides itself on being a tool that can bring meaningful practice to a broad demographic at a fraction of the cost. The platform is designed to eliminate scalability challenges from 1: 1 models to address the concerns of millions of people across the nation. In a team that recently welcomed a new director of pharmaceutical technology, Ajay Khatri plans to use his background in the development and growth of health systems to carry out Real’s mission. I recently spoke with Ajay, who believes that Real’s goal of equalizing mental health resources is key to making a significant impact and how he shared with us how his experience can help.

Gary Drenik: Tell us a little about your pharmaceutical technology experiences and how your pharmacy experiences can help you with the Real task?

Ajay Khatri: Having a track record in growing platforms for pharmaceutical companies, I have worked for a number of leading brands, including Johnson & Johnson and Alto Pharmacy, leading the creation of new businesses, restructuring, innovative practices to drive growth, and more.

I think there are similarities in the pharmaceutical space that have really prepared me to take on this task. They are:

  • Opportunities to promote a new type of care and provide a scalable model of how to deliver high user satisfaction
  • Regulated spaces are one of the most difficult to operate, but they have the greatest need for change and improvement for patients.
  • There are a number of factors in the ecosystem and in the supply chain, which can make access to quality care difficult

I am already using the skills I have developed from my own experience to increase Real’s ability to respond to people outside the traditional mental health system.

Drain: Why did you choose to join Real?

Khatri: I truly believe in Real’s role in scaling up and equalizing mental health resources, given that the first-hand mental health care system is broken.

One of the main distinguishing features of Real and one of the main factors that influenced me to join the company is that the platform can be a first mode of intervention or a way to manage mental health challenges before emergencies.

The industry has a basic supply and demand problem, and more Americans than therapists need help. Current models do not support the rising need for Americans. Notably, there are a number of applications that have been launched in space, but few publish them at the pace that the exams would need to show that they are on par with the current standard of care. Here Real is different and will be different because we believe that showing clinical data and impact will be a way for more Americans to truly participate in different models of care.

Long-term patient engagement has been one of the biggest problems facing the mental and behavioral health industries. Most Americans stop seeing a 1: 1 therapist after a few short appointments. Many companies are creating markets, but again this does not solve the problem of root engagement. Real Madrid is leading a model of care that allows members to work at their own pace, in their own homes and when they need it most.

Drain: What is Real?

Khatri: Real is a mental health care company that is building a new model of therapy. With a monthly subscription, Real offers its members access, on an anonymous basis, on their own terms, and at a price that is cheaper than other therapeutic methods. Through our therapist-designed programs, we are improving the quality of mental health care and making it available to more people, especially nearly 93% of people who are excluded from the current traditional 1: 1 therapy system.

Drain: What do you hope to bring to Real?

Khatri: According to the latest Prosper Insight and Analytics survey, more than 30% of Gen-Zs have been worried or more depressed about the pandemic, and the mental health crisis has only worsened since March 2020. I am excited to bring many lessons learned from my previous experience. Real. All of this includes navigating highly regulated spaces, ensuring influential business associations.

We have a great team at Real and my intention is to praise and balance the existing team with my experience and increase the wonderful work they are really doing.

I spent almost the last three years helping to scale the Alto Pharmacy business, I hope to bring that experience to help me scale Real. I am eager to support Real’s continued growth and scale so that more people have access to high quality, affordable and mental health care.

Drain: How do you practice mental well-being on a daily basis?

Khatri: Mental well-being is an important part of my life. One way to practice wellness is to make sure I spend a significant amount of time away from it every day. I find it gives me time and space to think while I value the ability to move my body.

Also, to talk about being a loving and caring couple, spending quality time is another source of support for me. I also have two children, both of whom put life into perspective. It gives me real joy to see them grow and to see the world through their eyes.

And finally, I believe in Real users! I welcome the opportunity to take care of my mental health on my schedule. I am constantly looking for new tools and resources to build a stronger relationship with myself and I am very happy to have found this in Real.
