The Houston Academy softball, golf, and boys ’tennis teams’ success with the Providence Christian track / field teams, all of which have led to the AHSAA’s rise in spring sports reform, the AHSAA announced Wednesday.

Last lineup includes, for the first time, Pike Liberal Arts of Troy, which was officially approved by the AHSAA last month. Patriots entered Class 2A in all sports.

All three HA teams and Providence Christian track / field teams were upgraded due to the competitive balance of AHSAAs assessed in schools. The CBF evaluates the points earned by a sport each year at the overall end of a team, in two years of a current ranking alignment.

The team that reached the final (1st or 2nd place) is valued at four points, while the team that reached the finals (3rd / 4th place) is valued at two points. The quarter-finals (5-8 places) value one point and 0.5 points for a team that reaches the quarter-finals.

The Houston Academy softball team, which won the 3A Class 3A State Championship last week and finished third last year, had six points, two more than the minimum. The Raiders, as a result, were promoted to Class 4A.

The HA boys golf team, which won the 3A Class State Championship in 2021, advanced to the 4A class with four points.

The Raider boys tennis team, which has won two titles in a row, jumps from Level 1A-3A to Level 4A-5A after eight points in the evaluation.

The Providence Christian athletics team rose to level 4A in 2021 after the girls team won the state title and finished fourth this year, while the boys team finished fourth and ninth last season.

New areas for next year were also allocated to the teams in Wednesday’s remodeling process.

The Raider softball team moves to Class 4A, Area 3, with the Dale County, Geneva and Andalusia and Slocomb state championship teams. The rise also had a tremendous impact on Class 3A. Ashford, Daleville, Northside Methodist now make up Area 3A, and New Brockton, Opp, Pike County and Straughn are in Class 3A, Area 3A.

The Houston Academy golf team moved to Class 4A, Section 1, and joins Providence Christian in the same section after PCS was promoted two years ago.

The Raider tennis teams were placed in Class 4A-5A, Section 3, which will feature BTW Magnet, Brewbaker Tech, Carroll, Charles Henderson, Eufaula, LAMP, Montgomery Catholic and Valley.

Providence track / field teams moved from Class 3A 13 to Group 4, Section 1. Other Wiregrass programs include Dale County, Geneva and Slocomb.

The two largest schools in the area, Enterprise and Dothan, remained in Class 7A in Area 3, but both schools won RE Lee of Montgomery as a new baseball and softball member. Jeff Davis and Prattville also remain.

Pike Liberal Arts, the last school to join the AHSAA, was assigned Class 5A, Area 5 in both baseball and softball. Abertzaleak will compete in the field with Goshen, Highland Home, Luverne and Zion Chapel.

Most of the baseball and softball fields in which Wiregrass participated were similar with a few exceptions created by the Competitive Balance Factor.

Class 1A, Area 2 has Elba, Florala, Houston County and Kinston with Pleasant Home in baseball and not softball.

Class 2A, Area 3 has Cottonwood, Geneva County, Samson and Wicksburg in both sports and Class 2A, Area 4 has Abbeville, Ariton, Barbour County and GW Long in both sports.

Baseball 3A, Area 3 has Ashford, Houston Academy, Northside Methodist and Providence Christian baseball, and 3A, Area 4 has Daleville, New Brockton, Opp and Pike County.

Class 4A, the 3rd baseball field in Andalusia, Dale County, Geneva and Slocomb.

In Baseball Class 5A, Field 3 has Carroll, Charles Henderson, Headland and Rehobeth as Eufaula will move to Field 6 as well as Beauregard and Valley. 5A, Area 3 softball has Carroll, Headland and Rehobeth with Charles Henderson 4. Area 4 with Brewbaker Tech, Greenville and Holtville.

By lowering Eufaula enrollment to Class 5A, the field does not have a Class 6A program.
